Abstract

This article describes barriers to full implementation of smart ticketing technologies in the public transport sector. The author discusses challenges related to funding, stakeholder collaboration, integration with legacy infrastructure, future-proofing and standardization of technology. Also examined are issues associated with passenger resistance to smart ticketing schemes, data privacy and security, and smart ticketing scheme complexity.
