Abstract

Within the last three years a number of public transport operators in the UK have started stage carriage bus services for disabled people. Generally the services provided are weekday off-peak and use conventional single and double deck buses fitted with lifts and modified to take from three to 12 wheelchairs. This paper (which is based on research carried out for the Transport and Road Research Laboratory) describes the vehicles which are being used, the services which they provide and the costs which are incurred. It also considers the areas which need further research, particularly in terms of defining the role of stage carriage and demand-responsive bus services for disabled people.
