Abstract
Japan, through a series of trial-and-error experiments, has made attempts at traffic calming for neighborhood streets. These attempts usually aim intensive investment at a small area, by comparison with the wider area traffic management approaches in other countries. Unfortunately, little progress has been made in Japan toward introducing statutory infrastructure, such as design standards for traffic calming measures and the planning process. Most traffic calming measures, such as humps, chicanes, and so on are not described in authorized road design standards, although movement has just begun on making clear stipulations on the legal standing of traffic calming methods.
