Abstract

The electric cone penetrometer provides a soil testing technique which has both an inherent high level of accuracy and repeatability. As a result, the data obtained provides information ideally suited to the application of statistical procedures. This paper discusses and demonstrates how statistics can be applied to assist in improving the information obtained from field investigations. Two examples are considered: the first to produce a reliable shear strength profile with depth and the other to investigate variations in stratigraphy across a site and hence to judge the adequacy of the investigation.(A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 828222.
