Abstract
This article outlines the strategy for developing the Swiss rail network. Development is planned over twenty years or longer, and includes expansion of services, building commuter rail systems, and enabling more freight to be carried on rail transport. Three key projects are the network of the future, new technologies, and new work processes. Network expansion for the future comprises new lines and trains, improved commuter stations, transferring freight to rail transport and separating faster passenger services from slower freight traffic. New technologies enable much of the expansion to take place on existing network: automated train control, digital GSM-R radio communications, and international enabling of services. New work processes include integrated rail traffic control from a Rail Control Centre, and divisional restructuring of administration for customer needs, capacity requirements, asset management and project management.
