Abstract
Since container ships are now taking the place of conventional cargo liners, these high-speed vessels tend to be subject to larger motions which means a considerable increase in power requirements, severe accelerations, slamming, and propeller racing. Decks also tend to become awash. In spite of such difficulties, rigid time schedules must be adhered to and navigational safety observed. In order to investigate these phenomena and to obtain data on seakeeping characteristics in rough seas for design purposes, the Shipbuilding Research Association of Japan has carried out extensive research, the results of which are presented in this paper with particualr reference to work and developments in the seakeeping qualities of high-speed container ships.
