Abstract
Seakeeping is a particularly important aspect of the performance of small ships such as patrol boats, since they experience the same seas as larger ships and their crews are the same as those of bigger ships and suffer equally from the effects of motion. The first section of this article discusses the components of ship motions and the effects of motion sickness upon crew. Design for seakeeping and the effects of varying dimensions upon motion are discussed next. In the final section, it is shown that various types of advanced naval craft have clear advantages over the monohull in their rough weather performance.
