Abstract
It is evident that variations in coal have a pronounced influence on the design of a boiler and plant auxiliaries. Through field operating experience, supported with extensive research and development facilities, design criteria have been established and auxiliary equipment developed and improved that will permit the utility industry to achieve their goals of high performance and availability with coal-fired equipment. Further, it is believed that the direct ignition of pulverized coal represents a major new development that will permit the industry to use coal more effectively as a major fuel source in a reliable and economically attractive manner.
