Abstract

When something must be done about an old or inefficient heating system, the challenge can be daunting. The decision will affect comfort, energy costs, and the air quality and safety of a home for years to come. Whatever the reasons for considering a new heating system-adding living space or replacing a system that is inefficient or just plain falling apart-this is a long-term investment, and it makes good economic sense to look carefully at energy efficiency. As this guide points out, there are a number of factors that determine the right choice for a particular home. Costs will include the price of the unit and distribution system, installation charges, and operating expenses. Topics include the following: finding the perfect fit; go to the source; air or water a central question; interpreting energy efficiency ratings; calculating costs; understanding energy source measurements; natural gas and propane equipment; oil equipment; oil system upgrade; electric equipment; integraded systems for space and water heating; room-by-room heating; heating cost worksheet.
