Methodology for Searching Bus Stop Timetables to Ensure Transit Punctuality

Abstract

Bus Rapid Transit is a new transport mode that has recently been in the limelight; in the Republic of Korea, the S-BRT, a Korean-style BRT that is a fast, punctual, and eco-friendly public transportation system considering local road conditions, has been proposed. The main difference between the S-BRT and existing BRT is that the former is able to support the existing Super Bus Management System (S-BMS) function, which aims to provide high-quality mobility services and efficiently operate, manage, and promote competition in public transportation by ensuring punctuality. In this study, a bus stop timetable search methodology was developed using time-of-day traffic signal schedule information and bus operation timetables. This enabled the management of departures and arrivals at stops so that buses were able to travel without stopping at signal intersections. Furthermore, a comprehensive framework consisting of five modules was proposed. The proposed methodologies were applied to Sejong City BRT service routes and, using the VISSIM tool, we demonstrated an improvement of approximately 6 % in punctuality performance.
