Abstract

This paper describes the underlying technology in complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors. The invention of CMOS image sensors with intra-pixel charge transfer is then presented. Continued improvements in CMOS image sensors are described. The realization of photon-counting CMOS image sensors as an emerging chapter in the CMOS image sensor story is also discussed.
