Abstract

This chapter discusses the nature of peacekeeping and its evolution through the years. It goes on to explain the legal basis of United Nations peacekeeping operations and the legal basis of regional peacekeeping operations. The chapter then discusses the content and scope of the principles of consent, neutrality/impartiality and use of force in self-defence in peacekeeping by looking at the relevant law, official documents and peacekeeping practice.
