Abstract
Vector graphics have a number of advantages over bitmapped graphics: You can encode complex information in a compact notation, you can specify subelements of graphics as their own distinct entities, and you can even change the characteristics of these elements on the fly. However, creating vector graphics (whether by using drawing programs, by writing the files by hand, or by generating them on the fly) takes considerably longer to do effectively than taking a photograph, dropping it onto a scanner, and pulling it up in your favorite graphics program.
