Abstract
Permanent mandibular second molar is the seventh tooth from the mid-sagittal plane. The tooth supplements mandibular first molar in function. It resembles maxillary first molar, except that second molar has only four cusps compared to the first molar that has five cusps and the overall size of the crown is smaller. The distal cusp seen in first molar is absent in this tooth. The cusps are nearly equal in size and the crown appears more rounded. The lingual cusps are placed at higher level than the buccal cusp. There are numerous supplemental grooves radiating from the central groove. Lingual convergence of the crown is little appreciated. Roots are distally inclined, closer and parallel to each other.
