Permanent Mandibular Second Premolar

Mandibular second premolar is the fifth tooth from the midline in the mandibular quadrants. It is the succedaneous teeth of deciduous mandibular second molar. It is well-developed compared to that of the first molar. Resembles first premolar from buccal aspect. There are two types of mandibular second premolars based on the number of the cusps and groove patterns, they are three cusp type and two cusp type. Normally premolars are called as bicuspids, Because of its variation in the cusp type, mandibular second premolar is also called as tricuspid, if it has three cusps. The three-cusp type has ‘Y’ shaped groove pattern. The two-cusp type has ‘H’ and ‘U’ groove pattern. Root appears long and bulkier.
