Abstract
The aggregate mass of endocrine cells in the gut exceeds that of all other endocrine organs combined. These endocrine cells are scattered among the mucosal epithelial cells of the stomach and small intestine. There are three established gastrointestinal hormones—gastrin, secretin and cholecystokinin (CCK)—and a long list of candidates. Gastrin is found mainly in the non-acid-secreting antral mucosa of the stomach and to a lesser extent in the upper small intestine, particularly the first part of the duodenum. Secretin and CCK are found in the mucosa of the upper two-thirds of the small intestine; CCK is identical with pancreozymin, once believed to be a separate hormone.
