Abstract
Anomie theories examine societal forces integrating and regulating members of society and the problems in the operation of norms, cultural goals, and institutionalized means. Macro factors are emphasized including large‐scale and widespread cultural, social, and economic forces. Direct empirical testing and measurement of anomie and related concepts with the exception of the newest anomie theory is limited and complicated. Revisions of earlier anomie perspectives offer some promise to overcome empirical problems.
