Abstract
This chapter discusses the importance of motivation. It defines motivation in three ways and describes the two distinct types of motivation for readers (internal and external). Also, it explains why people want to work with motivated employees. In addition, the chapter explores the several theories of motivation, including Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, Alderfer’s ERG theory, Herzberg’s motivation-hygiene theory, Vroom’s expectancy theory, McClelland’s theory of three needs, Locke’s goal-setting theory, and Pink’s theory of the puzzle of motivation. Furthermore, the chapter discusses how to motivate people in generations X and Y. It concludes by discussing techniques that can be used to motivate employees and patients.
