Abstract
Appreciative inquiry is a method for generating organizational change. At the same time it is also a valuable perspective-a way of being-that reflects a powerfully optimistic and constructive view of the world. Together, the perspective and methods of appreciative inquiry (AI) give us a useful tool for expanding our ability to introduce meaningful positive changes within an organization. Appreciative inquiry was formed upon a solid theoretical foundation. Many different strands of research have provided a contribution, beginning with social constructionism. Since appreciative inquiry is as much a philosophy as a method, there are opportunities to use elements of AI in many if not most Human Performance Technology (HPT) interventions. This chapter concludes that appreciative inquiry can be a very effective approach for organizational change, so long as the unique features and consequences of adopting this approach are well understood by senior management. Controlled Vocabulary Terms appreciative inquiry; Human performance technology; Organizational change
