Abstract

Abstract AC‐shielded power cables are used for power transmission and distribution of electric power from about 5 to 500 kV. This range is divided into two classes, “transmission” from about 69 kV and above, and “distribution” from about 5 to 69 kV.DC‐shielded power transmission cable has become increasingly important over the range from about 150 to 500 kV. Each of these classes of cables is based on one of several possible insulation systems and is used with accessories (splices, terminations, etc.) to create a cable system for transport of electric power. This article provides an overview of the important cable technologies, the relevant components and materials used in those technologies, accessories required to complete a cable system, and some aspects of cable system design.
