Abstract

Influence lines are very important when designing structures acted on by moving loads. This chapter shows the variation of an internal or external action depending on the position of the moving force along a statically determinate structure. This structure may be a beam, a frame or a truss. It focuses on constructing influence lines using the Muller–Breslau principle, and describes the deflections of influence lines. The chapter also describes the influence line of the bending moment which is obtained by applying the influence line construction procedure. The expression of the bending moment in relation to a section constitutes the influence line of the bending moment. The purpose of studying the influence lines of statically determinate structures is to allow the designer to analyze the studied structure under the effect of a moving force.
