Abstract

The major motivation for this paper is that there is currently an urgent need to implement policy strategies to bring about a transition to a low-carbon sustainable energy system. The idea is that the energy knowledge triangle may play an important role to contribute to this target but the energy knowledge triangle alone will not be sufficient to fully implement this transformation in a successful way. The core objective of this paper is to discuss and analyze how this can be done and especially which additional dimensions have to be considered. The major conclusion of this analysis is that the energy knowledge triangle might be able to develop technological solutions needed for combatting global warming but it has to be accompanied by interactions with policy makers and the broad public to bring about a significant progress for heading towards a sustainable low-carbon energy system in the long term.
