Mixed cropping of soybean with jowar and maize

In trials in the kharif [summer monsoon] seasons of 1969 and '70, soyabeans, maize and sorghum were sown either in pure stands or in mixed stands in rows 30 or 45 cm apart, or in 1 to 6 rows of soyabeans alternating with 1 to 6 rows of maize or sorghum. The soyabean/sorghum mixture gave the highest yields of 3.01 t/ha (0.55 t soyabean seed and 2.46 t sorghum grain), followed by sorghum alone with 2.58 t grain/ha; soyabeans and maize sown in alternate rows gave the lowest yields of 1.2 t/ha (0.52 t soyabean seed and 0.68 t maize grain).
