Sorghum alone vs. corn and sorghum in double-harvest program for silage

Abstract

Double cropping with maize or sweet corn followed by sorghum was compared with sorghum followed by its ratoon crop in field trials on fine sandy loam in 1971-4. Average DM yields for sorghum (1st crop), maize and sweet corn, based on 4 cultivars in each case, were 17.19, 12.86 and 7.08 t/ha, respectively. The sorghum ratoon crop gave 6.38 t, sorghum following maize 8.02 t and sorghum following sweet corn 8.65 t/ha. In 1973-4, total grain yields for any crop combination were not significantly different, though total forage yields decreased in the order forage sorghum + ratoon crop > maize/sorghum > sweet corn/sorghum
