Abstract
Maintenance management systems (MMS) began in the 1950s with research into management of maintenance operations in Connecticut and Iowa. The idea of applying management principles to highway maintenance gained popularity as the systems were better defined and the benefits became obvious. Maintenance management is a method of controlling resources to accomplish a predetermined level of service through planning, budgeting, scheduling, reporting and evaluating. Planning consists of defining maintenance activities, compiling a features inventory, establishing priorities, establishing quality, quantity, performance standards and compiling cost data.
