Capacity building. South-South cooperation.

This article discusses the role of capacity building in sustaining the full potential of South-South cooperation. More specifically, it discusses the activities undertaken by Partners in Population and Development to build the capacity of individuals and organizations to share their family planning and reproductive health services. In a brief discussion of the history of South to South cooperation, it is noted that this project has been created as a key mechanism to ensure implementation of the Program of Action. Some of the mechanisms used to successfully build capacity are training, research, study tours, fellowships, degree training, technical assistance, and collaborations. In the case of the Partners in Population, they have used the basic mechanisms of research, networking and exchange of information, and training and capacity building. Concrete examples are given to provide some of the basic elements of Partners capacity building strategies.
