Abstract

Background Recent years have seen tremendous advancements in nuclear imaging technology. These include the development of new detector materials for both single photon and positron emission imaging, the development of devices dedicated to single-organ imaging, and the development of devices that combine single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) or positron emission tomography (PET) with computed tomography (CT) in one gantry. Many of these inventions have already been deployed in commercially available scanners and have found widespread clinical acceptance. In this chapter, an overview of these new technologies, either already used in clinical routine or under investigation, is provided, with a focus on oncological imaging.
