Abstract
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) provides commuter rail, heavy rail, light rail, bus, trackless trolley, bus rapid transit, ferry, and paratransit service to Boston and 174 other communities in eastern Massachusetts. It the fifth largest transit property in the United States, based on a ridership of over 1.3 million daily trips. The agency’s asset inventory includes more than 2,500 vehicles, 885 miles of track, 20 miles of tunnels, 467 bridges, and 19 maintenance facilities. A large segment of its infrastructure dates back to the end of the 19th century. The first MBTA subway line, which opened in 1897, is the oldest in the United States. This paper reviews the history, present, and future of asset management at the MBTA.
