Abstract

The effects of three polysaccharide fractions isolated from a Fucus vesiculosus extract on serum lipid levels were evaluated in Triton-induced hyperlipaemic rats. The isolation was carried out by anion-exchange chromatography, and all fractions were mainly composed of fucose and sulphate. When administered to rats, the dose assayed (5 mg/kg) significantly lowered triglyceride and total cholesterol levels by 50-60% and 15-35% respectively.
