Metrological Analysis and Evaluation of Acupuncture-moxibustion Treatment for Colitis in Modern Literature

Objective To review year 1965～2005 literature on acupuncture and moxibustion and explore the regularities of point selection and methods for acupuncture-moxibustion treatment of colitis in order to supply objective and reliable data to research on acupuncture and moxibustion standardization.Methods A comprehensive analysis was made by a method of metrological analysis according to the data from China modern acupuncture-moxibustion information databank.Results Points Zusanli(ST 36),Tianshu(ST 25),Dachangshu(BL 25),Guanyuan(CV 4) and Zhongwan(CV 12) were most frequently used and the optimal combination for acupuncture-moxibustion treatment of colitis.Acupuncture and moxibustion were the main treatments.Conclusion Acupuncture and moxibustion are clinically effective in treating colitis.Because many points are used for a prescription,their specificity in treating this disease is not prominent.Further research on selection of optimal points should be carried out.
