Abstract

Objective To investigate the epidemic strains and drug-resistance of Shigella in Gansu province, and to provide scientific basis for prevention and treatment of diseases due to Shigella infection. Methods Serotyping and drug sensitive testing were conducted to detect the Shigella strains isolated from stool and food specimens. Results Three hundred and sixty-six Shigella strains were detected from 2 407 specimens, and the positive detection rate was 15.21%.The isolated strains were verified to be multidrug-resistant.The strains were resistant to eight drugs.Shigella flexneri was the main isolated strains(200 strains,54.64%),followed by Shigella sonnei(164 strains,44.81%),while in 2007,Shigella sonnei was the predominant strains(79.88%).Conclusion Shigella flexneri is the predominant strains in Gansu province, and Shigella sonnei increases in the recent years. The drug-resistance Shigella strains increased year by year.
