A study of primary posterior capsulotomy in cataract extraction with posterior capsulotomy lens implantation in children

Objective To evaluate the efficacy of primary posterior capsulotomy in preventing posterior capsular opacity after cataract extraction.Methods 44 cases(52 eyes) of congenital and traumatic cataract in children were treated by primary posterior capsulotomy or capsulectomy,or the combined anterior vitrectomy and posterior chamber lens implantation.Results Corrected visual acuity was 0.5 or better in 72% of the eyes and the results of follow up showed 90% of the eyes remainded transparent in the optic area.Conclusion It is demonstrated that capsusectomy is effective in prevening the posterior capsular opacity affer cataract extraction with posterior chamber lens implantation in children.Moreover combined anterior vitrectomy should be performed in those with the anterior capsule severly damaged.
