Abstract

Purpose To investigate the effect of extract of Ginkgo Biloba leaves(EGB50) protein expression of nerve growth factor(NGF) after sciatic nerve injury in rats. Methods Sciatic nerve injury was established by transaction of right sciatic nerve in 72 male Spragne Dawtey rats, which were randomly divided into two groups. The rats were given EGb50 in the experimental group and normal saline in the control group by gavage. At the same time, other 6 rats were employed as the normal control without any treatments. The distal part of injuried nerve, dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord were harvested 1,3,7,14,21 and 28 days postoperatively.Immunohistochemistry and image analysis were used to evaluate the expression of NGF. Results The expression of NGF in sciatic nerve, dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord was higher in the experimental group than that in the control group on the 7th,14th,21st and 28th day(P0.05,P0.01). Conclusions EGb50 increases the expression of NGF after sciatic nerve injury in rats.
