Histopathological changes of urinary bladders and kidneys of rats with oral administration of melamine

Objective To explore the pathological changes of urinary system in rats after oral administration of melamine for 28 days.Methods Forty male and female SD rats each were evenly divided into control,low,medium and high dose melamine treatment groups..Histopathological examination was performed for kidneys,bladders,hearts,livers and lungs of rats after 28 days of the melamine treatment.Results Transparent tubular cylinders were observed in three experimental groups.The pathological changes also included submucosal edema,hemangiectasis and exuviations in some local areas of mucosa,and sediments in bladders of rats with the oral administration of high dose of melamine.Conclusion Melamine could produce subacute pathological changes in the kidneys and bladders of rats when the animals were treated with oral administration of melamine.
