Abstract
Our improved understanding of pulpal inflammation and the healing responses of the pulp, along with the development of more biologically based materials, has led to more predictable treatment strategies in pulp therapy. Preserving the vitality of the tooth maintains its natural defence system and prevents the need for root canal treatment, which has numerous disadvantages. This chapter explores the pathogenesis of pulpal disease and the healing mechanisms of this exquisitely unique connective tissue. It outlines the strategies for treating the injured dental pulp and describes the materials used in vital pulp therapies.
