Abstract

The limit equilibrium method (LEM) and the strength reduction method (SRM) based on nite-element/nite-difference methods are currently the most popular methods among the engineers. For the limit analysis (includingthe rigid element) and distinct element methods, they are still not popularamong the engineers, and comparisons with the two methods will not be included in this chapter. Some of the engineers responsible for the design of dams in China even have doubt on the activation of energy balance along the vertical interfaces in limit analysis, which is shown to be not valid in Figure 2.20.
