Flouting cooperative maxim in conversation as the form of humor in The Hangover as the best American movie

cooperative principle in a conversation must be obeyed by the participant so that the conversation can run smoothly, as not to cause misunderstanding and the purpose of the conversation can be achieved. But sometimes, in a conversation participants do not always adhere to the rules of the cooperative principle, which is called flouting maxim. Flouting maxim is one of the causes that create humor in a conversation. This research aims (1) to describe the types of flouting maxim found in each utterance that contains humor in the movie The Hangover, (2) to describe the types of humor contained in utterances in the movie The Hangover. object of this research is the conversation in the movie The Hangover. researcher uses Grice's theory to explain the types of flouting maxim and the theory of humor (HSQ) from Martin to explain the kinds of humor that arise as a result of flouting maxim. researcher uses qualitative methods in a descriptive form to answer problems in the data. object of this research is the conversation in The Hangover movie. This research aims to analyze the types of flouting maxim and the kinds of humor that arise as the effect of flouting maxim in The Hangover movie. When analyzing data, the researcher uses several steps such as identifying data, categorizing data, interpreting data and typing conclusions. The results of the research showed that there were 62 data of flouting maxim that contained humor. From the analysis that has been done, the researcher found 23 flouting maxim of quantity, 15 flouting maxim of quality, 18 flouting maxim of relation and 6 flouting maxim of manner. In addition, the researcher also found 14 kinds of affiliative humor, 3 kinds of self-enhancing humor, 14 kinds of self-defeating humor and 31 kinds of aggressive humor. It can be concluded that the dominant type of flouting maxim is the flouting maxim of quantity, because there are 23 utterances that indicate flouting maxim of quantity which aims to create a punchline that creates humor. researcher also concluded that the dominant the kind of humor in “The Hangover” movie is aggressive humor because it is related to the attitude of the characters in the movie.
