Efficacy of phacoemulsification combined with vitrectomy on proliferative diabetic retinopathy and cataract

Objective To investigate the efficacy and safety of phacoemulsification combined with vitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy and cataract.Methods Phacoemulsification combined with vitrectomy were performed in 59 patients (64 eyes) with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and cataract from Jan.2009 to Oct.2010 in the third people's hospital of Zhoukou.The recovery of visual acuity and complications were observed post operatively.Results Vision was improved at different degTees in 60 eyes (93.75％),3 eyes (4.69％) had no change and impaired in 1 eye ( 1.56％ ).Postoperative iris neovascularization occured in 2 eyes and after cataract occured in 5 eyes.Other patients without complications.Conclusions Phacoemulsification combined with vitrectomy is a safety and effectivety method for proliferative diabetic retinopathy and cataract.
