Effect of BIPAP on acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with type II respiratory failure

Abstract
Objective To investigate the clinical effect of the facemask bi-level positive airway pressure (BI-PAP) assisted ventilation on patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(AECOPD) with type Ⅱ respiratory failure. Methods The total of 76 patients were divided into two groups at random:treatment group(41 ca-ses)and control group(35 cases). The routine therapy was only given in the control group,but BIPAP assisted ventilation and routine therapy both were given in the treatment group. The measures of heart rate, respiratory rate and arterial gas anal-ysis were observed before and after treatment. Results The heart rate, respiratory rate and arterial gas analysis in the treat-ment group were improved significantly than that in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusions BIPAP assisted ventila-tion is an efficient and safe treatment on AECOPD with type Ⅱ respiratory failure.
