Effects of vitrectomy in secondary surgery for severe ocular rupture

Objective To explore the therapeutic effect of severe ocular rupture after secondary vitrectomy. Methods We performed secondary vitreoretinal surgery on 145 patients （146 eyes） suffering from severe ocular rupture who were admitted to our hospital from February 2005 to December 2007, the therapeutic effect was observed. Results The visual acuity of 105 eyes （71.92 % ） improved in different degree compared with that before operation. The visual acuity remained unchanged in 36 eyes （24.66 % ） ,and 5 eyes （3.42%） had worse vision. Among 22 eyes with no-lightperception（NLP）, 12 eyes （54.55%） had light-perception or over. The retina was reattached in 51 eyes （91.07%） from totally 56 eyes of retinal detachment before operation. 15 eyes （10.27%） had recurrent retina detachment in which 12 eyes had undergone vitrectomy again and had got the reina reattached. Conclusion Through proper primary repair of the wound, and adequate and timely vitreous surgery on the second stage, the majority of traumatic eyeballs could be salvaged and effective vision could be restored.
