Strategic treatment of pars plana vitrectomy for complicated ocular trauma

Objective To evaluate the effect of patients with complicated ocular tramna treated by pars plana vitrectomy. Methods Clinical data of 37 cases (37 eyes) with complicated ocular trauma treated with vitrectomy surgery in a period from February 2006 to January 2007 were analyzed retrospectively. Results 36 eyes (97.30%) were cured with one-off operation. 1 eye was failing. The second vitreous surgery with silicone oil tamponade were carried out in 2 eyes eight weeks post-operatively. 1 eye was unsuccessful. All cases were followed up for three to eight months. Visual acuity improved in 31 eyes (83.78%),including 13 (35.14%) with visual acuity 0.1,0.1-0.3 in 12 eyes (32.43%) and better than 0.3 in 6 eyes (16.22%). 5 patients (13.51%) remained unchanged and 1 eye (2.70%) had worse vision. Conclusion A majority of complicated ocular trauma eyes can be salvaged with considerable visual recovery after correct surgery strategy.
