Investigation and study of patients' cognition on nurses' profession

Objective To understand patients' cognition on nurses' profession, in order to relieve the strained relationship between nurses and patients at the moment. Methods A total of 379 patients were investigated by self-made questionnaire. Results The total number of valid return was 370, and the valid usable return rate was 97.63%.The results showed that: 271 (73.24%) patients thought that women are more suitable for nurses in terms of the gender of the nurses.270 patients (72.97%) thought that nurses should always keep smiling in terms of the nurses' attitude.298 (80.54%) patients thought that nurses should possess a bachelor's degree in terms of nurses' education. 165 patients (44.59%) thought that services provided by nurses with high seniority were much better than that of nurses with low seniority in terms of working experiences.295 patients (79.73%) thought that technology is the most important for nurses' work in terms of the nurses' technology, 212 patients(57.30%) could accept but dislike nurses' flaws in the work.In terms of trust to the nurses, only 175 patients (47.30%)would ask the nurses for help when needed.In terms of the understanding of the relationship between nurses and patients, 180 (48.65%) thought that nurses help patients. Conclusion Patients' acceptance to male nurses and the trust to the nurses are not ideal. Patients have much requirements for nurses' service attitude, education, working experience and operating skills, and they have biase with the relationship between patients and nurses.The patients' cognition on nurses are one-sided.
