A Deixis Analysis Of Selected Song Lyrics In Shawn Mendes’s “Illuminate” Album

The puposes of this study is to identify types of deixis (Person deixis, Time Deixis, Place Deixis, Discourse Deixis, and Social Deixis) and to decribe what those deixis refer to. This study focuses on the use of deixis in Shawn Mendes Songs Lyric. In conducting this study, the writer used the qualitative method as the data categorized to the type of deixis (Person deixis, Time Deixis, Place Deixis, Discourse Deixis, and Social Deixis) that describe the referents. The data described refer to the theory of Levinson (1983). From the analysis result, the writer found that time deixis is the most dominantly used in the dialogues of Shawn Mendes Songs Lyric. It was also found that the referents were indicated from the context in each scene since they provide the clue about the referents that the speaker refers to.
