Abstract

The energy spectra of alpha particles from bombardment of C/sup 1//sup 2/ , O/sup 1//sup 6/, and MQ/sup 2//sup 4/ with 15 Mev deuterons are measured at laboratory angles between 10 and 90 deg , using an ionization chamber with a resolution in energy of ahout 1.2%. The alpha groups leading to the 1.74 Mev, T = 1, 0/sup +/ level of B/sup 1//sup 0/ and to the 2.31 Mev, T = 1, 0+ level of N/ sup 1//sup 4/ are not observed. The 2.22 Mev level of Na/sup 2//sup 2/ is slightly excited for angles of observation less than 40 ut for higher angles it appears with an intensity comparable with the intensity of other T = 0 levels of Na/sup 2//sup 2/. Angular distributions and absolute cross sections corresponding to the ground, 0.72, 2.15, and 3.58 Mev states of B/sup 1//sup 0/; to the ground state of N/sup 1//sup 4/; and to the ground, 0.58, 0.89, l.53, and 2.58 Mev states of Na/sup 2//sup 2/ are reported. The general shape of these angular distributions indicates that the (d, alpha ) reactions, leading to the low lying states of the residual nuclei, proceed by a direct surface interaction. Attemptsmore » are made to fit the data with plane and distorted wave calculations. (auth)« less
