Abstract
Government has considerable involvement in sport in a variety of ways, particularly through the national Sports Councils, through the Sports Lottery Fund, and through local authorities. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the scale and scope of this involvement; explain the economic rationale for it; examine possible problems with such interventions; and, finally, analyse some key issues in public sector supply of sport.
