Critiques: The importance of underpinning psychological theory in an informed economic and sociological frame

As therapists, we share a collective interest in refining our respective modalities to facilitate understanding of developmental psychology in the hope we can facilitate troubled individuals to develop the skills and insights that allow them to gain psychological and practical footholds. This endeavour we trust will enhance the opportunities for personal growth. While the development and refinement of theory is important, a theory is of limited value until it is placed into the relevant social and economic context that prescribes the individual's fit in the social order and determines mental and physical wellbeing. To this end, new right capitalism has moved western democracies in the direction of desocialised responsibility with an emphasis on individual responsibility to the detriment of co-operative pro-social cohesion. De-socialised responsibility is legislated and a prescribed top down process, in contrast to the organic collective cohesion that was a feature of traditional communities prior to the industrial and agricultural revolutions.
