AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE USED IN DREAM THEATER’S SONG’S LYRIC

This final paper is about figurative language. The objectives of this final paper are to find out the figurative language in Dream Theater’s songs lyric. The researcher analyzed each figurative language using Perrine’s theory. In this final paper, the researcher tried to explore figurative language, types of figurative language, and the songs lyric that belong to figurative language. This final paper is descriptive qualitative study because the data are expressions of figurative language in Dream Theater’s songs lyric. The researcher used the note taking technique because all of data are taken from the songs lyric. After collecting the sentences that have figurative language, the researcher tried to analyze it by using Perrine’s theory. Based on the analysis, there are two results that the researcher found in Dream Theater’s songs lyric. First, the researcher found four types of figurative language. It can be categorized as hyperbole with 14 data, metaphor with 7 data, personification with 40 data, and simile with 14 data. And the second is the most frequent figurative language in Dream Theater’s songs lyric is personification. Key words: figurative language, type of figurative language, Dream Theater
