Abstract
The behavior and conditions for the floatation separation of Hg (Ⅱ) from other metal ions were investigated with tetrabutyl ammonium bromide(TBAB)-potassium iodide(KI) in water system. The results showed that Hg (Ⅱ) reacted with TBAB and KI to form a ternary ion association precipitate 2 in aqueous solutions. This precipitate floated on the surface of water phase, forming liquid-solid phases with a distinct boundary. When the concentrations of tetrabutyl ammonium bromide and KI were 6.0×10-4 mol/L and 5.0×10-3 mol/L respectively,Hg could be quantitatively separated from Rh(Ⅱ),Fe(Ⅱ),Sn,Cr(Ⅱ),Mn(Ⅱ),Ce(Ⅱ),Al(Ⅱ),Ga(Ⅱ),Co(Ⅱ),V(Ⅱ),W(Ⅱ),Ni(Ⅱ),Zn(Ⅱ) and Mo(Ⅱ) by floatation. The floatation rate of Hg (Ⅱ) in synthetic water samples was higher than 99.3 %,and that of other metal ions was less than 2.9 %.This method was somewhat practical for the separation and enrichment of trace mercury.
