Abstract

A summary of the development of plutonium measurement systems is presented. The testing and evaluation of an on-line plutonium monitor through laboratory experiments have proceeded on high concentration product-type material and low concentration process-type solutions. By applying the techniques of gamma-ray spectroscopy to the assay of plutonium nitrate solutions, isotopic and total plutonium content of process solutions can be determined without breaching the containment to take standard laboratory samples. The detailed design for the installation of such a monitoring system in the PNSL-2 sample glovebox area is also presented. These systems can be used to inventory the quantity and type of plutonium in process streams and also as a device to safeguard the plutonium by monitoring changes in plutonium content. The role of the isotopic concentration monitor in the overall dynamic materials control system is also discussed.
