Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship of the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF),matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9) with angiogenesis in laryngeal carcinoma. Methods VEGF,MMP-9 and microvessel count(MVC) were detected by immunohistochemical method in 42 laryngeal carcinoma specimens. Results The mean MVC was signifecantly higher in tumors with positive VEGF or MMP-9 than in tumors with negative VEGF or MMP-9(23.82 ±3.71 vs.19.53±5.43 for VEGF and 24.16±4.06 vs.20.93±4.23 for MMP-9).The expression of VEGF and MMP-9 did not correlate with the differentiation and clinical staging of laryngeal carcinoma. Conclusion VEGF and MMP-9 may play an important role in the process of neovascularization in laryngeal carcinoma.
